Do I Need a Professional Photographer for Family Portraits?

I picked up a camera because I love memories.

Not just the idea of them. The actual physical thing. A photo in your hand or on your wall that takes you right back to exactly how something felt. That is what got me. The way a single image can reach back in time and give you a moment you thought was gone.

And then I had kids, and it became something deeper than that.

One day a picture is all we will have left. I think about that a lot. It is why I kept shooting. It is why I started doing this for other families in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Because those moments are happening right now, in your house, in your backyard, on the beach, and they are moving faster than any of us are ready for.

So when someone asks me whether they really need a professional photographer, I always want to ask back: what are you going to do with the time that is passing right now?

Here is my honest answer.

What a Professional Photographer Actually Does Differently

The biggest misconception I run into is that professional photography is mostly about having a nice camera. It really is not.

What I am doing during a session is reading the light, reading your family, and chasing the moments that happen in between the posed ones. Those are almost always the best ones. The whisper between siblings. The toddler who breaks away and takes off running toward the waves. The way a parent looks at their kid when they think no one is watching.

As a mom myself, I know how fast those moments go. I also know how hard they are to catch when you are the one living them. That is why having someone else behind the camera matters.

Virginia Beach and Norfolk give us some genuinely beautiful places to work with. First Landing State Park has cypress trees and soft filtered light that photographs beautifully at any time of day. Pleasure House Point has that wide open waterfront feel that is hard to beat. The Norfolk Botanical Garden is one of the most underrated portrait locations in all of Hampton Roads. Downtown Norfolk and the Waterside area are perfect for families who want something with a little more texture and character. And the Virginia Beach oceanfront at golden hour is exactly as gorgeous as it sounds.

Here is what you are actually getting when you hire a professional:

Lighting that works for your whole family. I shoot almost exclusively with natural light outdoors, which means timing is everything. Virginia Beach summers are beautiful but intense, so I schedule most sessions in that last hour or two before sunset when the light turns warm and soft and everything looks the way it feels in your memory.

Posing that does not feel like posing. Most families feel stiff in front of a camera, especially kids. Part of my job is making everyone forget I am there. I give gentle direction and then step back and let things unfold naturally.

Edited images that are actually finished. What comes out of the camera is just a starting point. Editing is where everything comes together into a cohesive gallery you will actually want to print and put on your wall.

Someone who can roll with whatever happens. Kids are unpredictable. I have a few of my own so I promise nothing surprises me anymore. We figure it out and we still come home with something beautiful.

The Sessions Where It Really Matters

Not every photo moment needs a professional. Everyday snapshots on your phone are wonderful. I take them constantly.

But there are seasons where you will be so glad you did something more intentional.

Newborn sessions. Those first weeks are gone before you even find your footing. Newborn photography is also one of the most specialized areas of portrait work. It requires safety training, the right setup, and a lot of patience. It is worth doing right.

Maternity sessions. Pregnancy moves faster than anyone warns you about. A maternity session at a place like First Landing State Park or the Norfolk Botanical Garden is a chance to slow down and actually document this season of your life in a way that feels as significant as it actually is.

Family portraits. Whether this is a yearly tradition or a one-time milestone, these are the photos you print. Frame. Send to grandparents. Show your kids in twenty years. Virginia Beach summers bring so many families out to the beach and the waterfront, and those golden hour sessions are some of my favorite of the whole year.

Engagement sessions. Downtown Norfolk and the Waterside area are gorgeous for couples who want something with real character and texture behind them. And engagement photos have practical use too, for save the dates, wedding websites, and announcements.

What About My Friend With a Nice Camera?

We all have that friend. And maybe they are genuinely talented.

But there is a real difference between someone who loves photography as a hobby and someone who has spent years learning how to deliver consistent results session after session, in all kinds of Hampton Roads light, with all kinds of kids, including the ones who have a complete meltdown five minutes in.

When you hire a professional you are also getting reliability. A finished gallery delivered on time. Someone who shows up prepared and treats your memories like the investment they are.

What to Look for When You Are Ready to Book

Consistency. Look at a range of their work, not just their best few photos. Different families, different settings, different lighting conditions. Consistency is what tells you something real.

A style that already looks like what you want on your wall. My work is warm, natural, and almost always outdoors. If that feels like you, we are probably a good fit.

Someone you actually like. Your kids will pick up on your energy during a session. Choose a photographer you would genuinely enjoy spending an hour outside with.

One Day a Picture Is All We Will Have Left

That thought is what drives everything I do.

I started this because I wanted to hold onto moments from my own kids' lives. Now I get to do that for families all across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Hampton Roads. And when someone opens their gallery and writes back to tell me they are crying because the photos are perfect, I know we made something that will last.
